The Staples Award was begun to honor Past President, Herman D. Staples, M.D., the fourth President and a founding member of the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. In addition to his full time clinical practice, academic, and community contributions, Dr. Staples and his wife, Mary Staples, managed the ASAP operations together for many years. Dr. Staples was, essentially, our first and only Medical Director/CEO to date, until his death in 1995.

 

This award is given to the ASAP member who embodies Dr. Staples's spirit, integrity and dedication to the treatment of adolescents who has also made noteworthy contributions to ASAP in the past year. The recipient of the 2026 Herman D. Staples, MD Award was Adam Sagot, D.O. Although a relatively new member of ASAP, Dr. Sagot has quickly distinguished himself through his many contributions since joining, in particular in the past year. During this time, he has served as our President-Elect and Chair of our Membership Committee and Curriculum Development Committee and as Co-Chair of our Annual Program Committee. In these capacities, he has overseen streamlining of our membership levels and dues structure, implementation of the "Organizational Affiliate" level of membership, assisted in recruitment and retention of members, served as a judge for our annual resident/fellow/student paper and poster competitions, written blog posts and newsletter articles, and much else to support ASAP. He has done this while serving as Chief Medical Officer at Preferred Behavioral Health Group in Eatentown, New Jersey.
